Proud Lake Recreation Area

Medicinal Plant & Tree Walks

bud, bark & branch walk : winter weeds & medicine trees

Saturday, March 21, 2026

1:00 to 4:00 pm

Join herbalist jim mcdonald on this walk, where we'll be wandering around Proud Lake State Recreation Area to explore the medicinal virtues, identification, folklore and preparation of many of the region's common trees and bushes before they leaf out. The information presented will be both specific and practical, based on jim's 25+ years experience in gathering, preparing, and using herbal remedies, and provide a basis for participants to incorporate what they have learned into usable skills with which to maintain and restore health. Please note that walks are offered walks rain, snow or shine; please have clothes to keep you warm & dry if there's any chance of snow, sleet or rain.

cost...

Each walk is $40, and includes extensive handouts on ethical wildcrafting, medicine making, and some of the plants discussed.

Technically, a State of Michigan Recreation Passport is required. They are available at the main park office. Without a pass they will sometimes leave a "ticket" but its just for the cost of the daily park pass. If someone has a Michigan Recreation Passport entry license plate, there's no fee. Carpooling will make this a minimal cost.

to register...

Please use a "register for a walk" button on this page ; pre-registration helps SO MUCH and is deeply appreciated.  Likewise, sharing with and bringing along friends, family, and random passersby makes you awesome! If there is space left you can also bring payment the day of the walk.
